One of the conjoined twins who were successfully separated in a historic surgery at Mankweng Hospital in Limpopo has died. The twins, who were joined at the head, underwent the complex procedure several weeks ago.

Historic Separation Surgery

The separation of the twins was a landmark achievement for South African medical professionals. Following the death, Limpopo Health MEC Dr. Phophi Ramathuba expressed her sadness and acknowledged the inherent risks of such a complex procedure. According to eNCA, Dr. Ramathuba stated, “We don’t know what could have happened,” highlighting the unpredictable nature of the situation.

Minister of Home Affairs, Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi, visited Mankweng Hospital after learning of the passing of one of the twins, according to SABC News. His visit underscored the national attention and concern surrounding the case.

The surviving twin remains under medical care. The circumstances surrounding the death are being closely monitored by the medical team, and further details are expected to be released as they become available. EWN reported that the cause of death has not yet been disclosed.
