The transition follows a chaotic week triggered by Platner’s abrupt exit from the campaign after he faced allegations of sexual assault, which he has denied.

Over the weekend, Maine Democrats held nominating meetings across 16 counties to select 500 delegates, with the remaining 101 coming from the party’s central committee. According to Jackson’s campaign, his supporters swept the contests, securing 481 of the 500 available delegate seats. While these commitments are not legally binding until the formal state convention this Saturday in Bangor, the math has left little room for competitors.

Rivals Exit to Unify the Party

Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, physician Nirav Shah, and former congressional staffer Jordan Wood were among those who suspended their bids.

The exits were marked by a shared sense of urgency regarding the November election. Democrats don’t have a day to waste in unifying around that shared goal, said Bellows in a statement. Dan Kleban, founder of the Maine Beer Company, also withdrew, noting that it had become clear from the county nominating meetings that we lack a path forward.

Shah, who had previously questioned Jackson’s statewide electability, pivoted to a message of reconciliation. Susan Collins will not be defeated without a united Democratic Party, Shah stated. And we cannot unite without treating one another with respect.

The Political Profile of a “Pickup Truck Progressive”

Jackson, 58, brings a distinct populist background to the race. A logger who served in the Maine House and later as president of the state Senate from 2018 to 2024, he describes himself as a pickup truck progressive. His policy platform aligns closely with the left-wing of the party, including support for Medicare for All, a tax on billionaires, and the abolition of ICE. He has also been a vocal critic of U.S. military support for Israel regarding the conflict in Gaza.

His history, however, is not without controversy. Reports have surfaced detailing a combative leadership style during his time in the state Senate, including incidents where he reportedly threw a water bottle after failing to secure a vote and engaged in shouting matches with other lawmakers. Some party observers have raised questions about whether his public speaking and temperament will translate well to a high-stakes U.S. Senate race against a veteran incumbent like Collins.

Stakes for the U.S. Senate Majority

The Maine contest is viewed by national Democrats as a critical opportunity to flip a seat as they fight to reclaim the Senate majority. The pressure is compounded by the fact that Maine is a state that Kamala Harris carried in 2024, yet Collins has historically shown resilience, surviving multiple tough reelection challenges over her nearly three decades in office.

For Jackson, the transition from a gubernatorial primary runner-up to the Senate nominee has been a whirlwind. Reflecting on the weekend’s delegate surge, he told supporters in a Facebook video: I’ve been getting text messages all day about what a great job I did, and I didn’t do a god damn thing. All of you just smoked it.

State Democrats have until July 27 to finalize their choice for the general election ballot. With the convention set for this weekend, the party is now betting that Jackson’s populist appeal can recapture the momentum that the Democratic ticket lost following the scandal that sidelined Platner.
