Scope of the Arrests in Singapore
The suspects are accused of producing, possessing, and distributing child sexual abuse materials, as well as engaging in sexual communication and commercial sex with minors.
Additional suspicions include the transmission and sale of obscene materials, possession of obscene films, and threatening to distribute intimate images or recordings.
Early investigations by the Singapore Police Force (SPF) found that eight of the arrested individuals knowingly accessed and downloaded child sexual abuse materials through peer-to-peer services and online messaging platforms.
International Cooperation and Specific Cases
Police investigated two men, aged 26 and 28, for making cross-border payments to access obscene materials via a Telegram channel.
The case developed after the Singapore police received information from Malaysian authorities that an individual was allegedly selling such materials to people in Singapore.
In a separate case, a man was arrested on March 27 following a referral from a non-governmental organization. Investigators found materials on his devices involving two victims who had been sexually exploited by someone overseas via an online platform.
The Singapore police worked with overseas law enforcement to identify the offender. Authorities noted that images of another potential victim were also found on the devices, and investigations remain ongoing.
Legal Penalties
Anyone convicted of producing child abuse material may be jailed for up to 10 years and be liable to a fine or caning.
Those who knowingly possess or gain access to child abuse material may face up to five years in prison upon conviction, along with fines or caning.
