“Before we begin, I want to just pay my respects to the people, unfortunately two are no longer with us, Brown University, nine injured and two are looking down on us right now from Heaven,” Trump told guests at a holiday reception at the White House. He added, “Brown University, great school, really one of the greatest schools anywhere in the world. Things can happen.”

Saturday’s violence at Brown brought the number of mass shootings in the US for the year to at least 389, according to the Gun Violence Archive. The attack has reignited the debate over federal gun control measures.
Reactions to the Shooting
Senator Chris Murphy, a Democrat, drew parallels to the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting in Connecticut, which killed 26 people. “What I know is that a community never, ever recovers from a shooting like this,” he told CNN on Sunday.
Person of Interest Detained
A person of interest in the shooting that killed two people and wounded nine others at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, on Saturday has been detained, police have said. Providence police chief Oscar Perez confirmed at a news conference on Sunday that the person of interest is in their 20s, but did not provide further details about their connection to Brown.
