US President Donald Trump has announced that the United States is reviewing a possible reduction of US troops in Germany, with a final determination expected in the near future.

  • The US is currently reviewing the possible reduction of military personnel in Germany.
  • As of December 2025, more than 36,000 active service members are stationed in the country.
  • Germany hosts five of the seven US garrisons in Europe.

In a post on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday, Trump stated that the administration is studying the reduction of forces and will make a decision over a short period of time.

Germany currently maintains the largest US military presence in Europe. According to the US Defense Manpower Data Center, more than 36,000 active service members were stationed in Germany as of December 2025.

This presence includes personnel at Ramstein in southwestern Germany, which is regarded as the largest US overseas air force base. Following Germany, the United Kingdom and Italy have the largest concentrations of US personnel on the continent.

Diplomatic Tensions Over Iran

The announcement follows recent friction between Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Merz recently stated that the United States was being “humiliated” by the leadership of Iran.

On Monday, Merz claimed that Iranian leadership, specifically the Revolutionary Guards, were skillful at avoiding negotiations and leading Americans to Islamabad without producing any results.

Trump responded to these comments on Truth Social, stating that Merz “doesn’t know what he’s talking about!”

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul later clarified the Chancellor’s remarks, emphasizing that the comments were directed at the behavior of Iran. Wadephul stated that Iran is misunderstanding its position and overplaying its role.
