At least three people have serious injuries following a four-vehicle crash west of Tekapo this evening. The crash, which occurred around 7 p.m. between Tekapo Powerhouse Rd and Braemar Rd, has blocked State Highway 8.
Tekapo Crash Injures Multiple People
A police spokesman said three people are reported to have serious injuries, while another has moderate injuries. Two of those with serious injuries have been airlifted to Christchurch Hospital by rescue helicopter.
Emergency services are currently at the scene, with three rescue helicopters responding to the crash. Paramedics are still assessing the remaining two injured people.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand personnel extricated two people who were initially trapped in one of the vehicles. Three vehicles, a critical care paramedic, and a manager are also at the scene.
Authorities are advising motorists to postpone travel between Tekapo and Twizel if possible, or to expect delays. NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi has also advised caution along the route.
State Highway 8 is expected to remain closed for some time.
