Type 2 diabetes diagnoses among women in their 20s in England have surged by 69% over the past decade, according to a major study published in the journal Lancet Regional Health. Experts warn that the condition, now appearing in patients as young as 14, is becoming more aggressive and is increasingly linked to rising obesity levels. While older adults still account for the majority of new diagnoses, the rapid uptick in younger demographics has prompted urgent calls for more intensive intervention strategies.
Rising Diagnosis Rates Among Young Women
Recent analysis of NHS England data covering 2011 to 2024 reveals a stark shift in the demographics of type 2 diabetes. While the condition has traditionally been considered a disease that primarily affects older adults, researchers at Imperial College London found that diagnosis rates are climbing rapidly among those under 40. The most acute increase is appearing in women aged 20 to 29.
The study found that the leap in diagnoses for women in this age group—69%—is far higher than the increase observed among men in the same age bracket, which saw a smaller rise. Conversely, diagnoses in Britons aged between 60 and 79 have decreased over the same period. NHS England estimates that 12,000 people under the age of 30 are now living with type 2 diabetes, with women making up a larger proportion of these younger cases.
The Link to Obesity and Early-Onset Risks
Health experts point to rising obesity levels as a primary driver for these trends. The study found that the waistlines of women under 30 have grown larger than any other group since 2011. The average Body Mass Index (BMI) of female diabetics in this age group grew from 37.7 to a morbidly obese score of 40.7. Researchers noted that BMI at the time of diagnosis is increasing faster in younger adults than in older age groups, suggesting that current government anti-obesity measures are not effectively reaching younger generations.
The urgency of the situation is compounded by the nature of the disease in younger patients. Clinicians note that early-onset type 2 diabetes—defined as the condition appearing in those under 40—tends to be more aggressive. Left unmanaged, the disease increases the risk of serious complications, including heart disease, stroke, blindness, and limb amputation. Diabetes UK has warned that when the disease develops at a younger age, it raises the risk of devastating complications and can cut lives short.
Global Trends and Public Health Challenges
In Malaysia, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Dzulkefly Ahmad reported that cases are now being detected in individuals as young as 14. Data from the National Diabetes Registry (NDR) showed 1,926 new cases involving individuals under 30 in 2024, rising to 1,932 cases in 2025, with another 660 cases reported in the first six months of 2026. Further screening in Malaysia through the National Health Screening Initiative (NHSI) 2025 assessed 347,813 individuals aged 18 to 30. Results showed that 3.4% had elevated blood glucose levels and 8.8% recorded high blood pressure, despite 98.1% of participants having no prior history of non-communicable diseases.
Intervention Strategies
Authors from Imperial College London emphasized that earlier and more intensive interventions addressing diet, physical activity, and the wider determinants of severe obesity are needed.
While type 2 diabetes can sometimes be put into remission through healthy eating and weight management without relying on glucose-lowering medications, researchers suggest that newer treatments, such as GLP-1 jabs and pills, might play a role alongside lifestyle advice.

Policy-based interventions are also being tested. Malaysia introduced a sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) tax in July 2019. Health authorities are shifting their delivery models toward preventive healthcare, prioritizing early detection to prevent long-term organ damage.
Early diagnosis remains the most effective tool to manage the condition and prevent long-term complications.
