Ireland will provide an additional €40 million in aid to Ukraine, building on €25 million already donated in February, as Russia’s war in the country continues. Foreign Affairs Minister Helen McEntee announced the funding during a visit to Kyiv.

Additional Funding Breakdown

The €40 million package includes over €26 million in humanitarian assistance and almost €14 million for long-term development and peacebuilding support. An additional €2 million will be allocated to Moldova to address challenges stemming from the conflict in Ukraine.

The humanitarian aid will be distributed among organizations such as the Red Cross and UNHCR, the UN refugee agency. Development assistance will support projects focused on civil protection shelters, nutrition, healthcare, human-rights monitoring, public investment programs, and Ukraine’s progress toward EU membership.

The initial €25 million donation in February was designated for the Ukraine Energy Support Fund, aimed at bolstering Ukraine’s critical energy infrastructure.

Recent Attacks and Casualties

Five people were killed in Ukraine on Tuesday due to Russian drone attacks. Four deaths occurred in the Cherkasy region, and one woman was killed in Lutsk.

Igor Taburets, head of the Cherkasy region’s military administration, reported four fatalities in the Zolotonosha district, stating they occurred in an open area during an air alert. Ukrainian officials reported that Russia launched 339 drones overnight and early Tuesday, destroying a postal terminal in Lutsk.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia used approximately 700 drones in the past 24 hours, marking the second such heavy attack in eight days. He referenced a previous attack on March 24, where over 900 drones were launched. He noted the attacks occurred despite a proposed ceasefire for Easter.

A drone strike in the Kherson region killed a woman and injured two others. Six more were wounded in the Poltava region, and two in the Khmelnytskyi region.

Territorial Control and Diplomatic Efforts

The Russian Defence Ministry claims to have taken full control of the Luhansk region in eastern Ukraine. However, a Ukrainian military spokesperson stated there have been no battlefield changes in the area in the last six months. Reuters could not independently verify the claim.

Russia also reported taking control of the villages of Verkhnya Pysarivka in the Kharkiv region and Boikove in the Zaporizhzhia region, assertions that Reuters could not independently verify.

The Kremlin reiterated its demand for Ukrainian forces to withdraw from parts of the Donetsk region to end the “hot phase” of the war, a demand Kyiv has repeatedly rejected.

Ukrainian President Zelensky is scheduled to hold a video call with US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to discuss negotiations with Russia, which are currently stalled.
