Ukraine War: Zelenskyy Pleads for US Aid as Putin Advances

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated Ukraine cannot secure victory against Russia without continued US support, while accusing Moscow of attempting to disrupt peace negotiations. This follows a claim by the Kremlin that a Ukrainian drone attack targeted Vladimir Putin’s residence, which Zelenskyy dismissed as “typical Russian lies” after a meeting with Donald Trump.

Zelenskyy Appeals for US Aid, Disputes Russian Claims

Zelenskyy described Russia as employing “dangerous statements” to undermine diplomatic efforts with the US aimed at resolving the conflict. He asserted that the alleged drone strike on Putin’s residence was a “complete fabrication” intended to justify further attacks on Ukraine, including Kyiv, and to deflect responsibility for ending the war.

Following a two-hour meeting with Trump in Florida on Sunday, Zelenskyy characterized the discussion as productive. He emphasized that Ukraine’s success is contingent on American assistance, outlining the challenges a lack of US backing would create. “I don’t trust Putin and he doesn’t want success for Ukraine,” Zelenskyy told Fox News.

Russia Focuses on Zaporizhzhia, Claims Strategic Initiative

Vladimir Putin has directed his army to intensify efforts to gain full control of the Zaporizhzhia region in southern Ukraine. A Russian commander, Col-Gen Mikhail Teplinsky, reported to Putin that forces are 15km (9.3 miles) from the region’s largest city.

Moscow currently controls approximately 75% of the wider Zaporizhzhia province, which was annexed in 2022 in a move widely condemned as illegal by Kyiv and Western nations. Gen Valery Gerasimov, chief of Russia’s general staff, stated Russian forces are advancing along most of the frontline, while Ukrainian forces are focused on defense and counterattacks. These battlefield reports have not been independently verified.

Russia’s foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, stated that the West must acknowledge Russia’s strategic advantage in Ukraine as discussions regarding a potential settlement progress. Lavrov asserted that the Russian army holds the strategic initiative and that Western countries are aware of this.

Nuclear Plant Repairs Completed, Theatre Reopens in Mariupol

Repairs to power lines near Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant have been successfully completed, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency. An IAEA team monitored the repairs, which took place under a local ceasefire brokered by the agency.

A historic theatre in the Russian-occupied city of Mariupol has reopened more than three years after its destruction in a Russian airstrike that killed hundreds of civilians sheltering inside. Moscow-installed authorities celebrated the rebuilding of the Donetsk Academic Regional Drama Theatre with a gala concert on Sunday night. The original theatre was destroyed in 2022 during the siege of the city. Mariupol’s Ukrainian city council described the reopening as “singing and dancing on bones.”
