UN Warns Intensifying El Niño Will Drive Unprecedented Global Heat

A rapidly intensifying El Niño weather phenomenon is set to dominate global climate patterns over the coming months, unleashing severe heatwaves, droughts, and flooding across multiple continents, according to a warning issued by the World Meteorological Organization WMO. The update, released on Friday, arrives as nations across Africa and Europe confront massive wildfires while monsoon rains batter parts of South Asia.

Scientists monitoring the equatorial Pacific report that a key area of ocean water used to measure El Niño strength has reached its warmest and most intense level ever recorded for this early stage in its formation, remaining at historic highs for the 15th week, as Columbia University researchers detailed. Central Pacific sea-surface temperatures are projected to soar more than 2.9 degrees Celsius above normal in key monitoring regions.

António Guterres Declares Uncharted Territory as Pacific Waters Warm

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres delivered a stark assessment of the unfolding climate conditions during a press briefing in New York on Friday. Emphasizing that the periodic climate pattern has moved past early warning stages, Guterres used strong language to describe the planetary impact.

“Two months ago, I warned that El Niño was arriving on our doorstep. Now it is inside the house — and turning up the heat.”

Guterres added that this is only a warm-up act, warning that the strengthening weather system is adding fuel to a planet already on fire with scorching heat domes and record hot seas. He pointed directly to fossil fuel expansion as a primary driver amplifying the crisis, calling for an immediate halt to new coal, oil, and gas projects.

Furthermore, Guterres noted that public attention often remains absorbed by regional conflicts in Ukraine, the Middle East, and Sudan, while the fossil fuel industry and certain countries engage in deliberate campaigns to pretend that climate problems do not exist. He also highlighted the severe occupational risks posed by rising temperatures, stating that extreme heat is claiming lives daily and exposing billions of workers to life-threatening conditions globally.

Global Rainfall Disruptions and Regional Drought Risks

The convergence of a strengthening El Niño and a positive Indian Ocean Dipole—where the western Indian Ocean becomes warmer while the eastern basin cools—is projected to alter seasonal rainfall significantly. According to data and forecasts released by the World Meteorological Organization, these coupled oceanic drivers will heighten the probability of below-normal rainfall across several critical agricultural zones.

The WMO seasonal forecast identifies heightened risks of drought, floods, and agricultural stress across the Indian Ocean basin, Indonesia, parts of India, south and east Australia, large sections of South America, and regions of equatorial Africa. Conversely, above-average rainfall is anticipated in southern Europe, central Asia, the Horn of Africa, and southeastern South America.

Columbia University climate scientist Jeffrey Shaman explained the mechanism behind the atmospheric temperature spikes. During an El Niño cycle, the ocean returns some of the accumulated heat from global warming back to the atmosphere.
