While some praised the look as a nod to her role, others criticized the use of ancient artifacts, raising concerns about cultural heritage and the ethics of luxury jewelry.
The Origin and Design of the Earrings
The jewelry worn by the actress during the London premiere consists of ancient gold discs, estimated to be between 2,000 and 3,000 years old. The pieces are now part of the private collection held by Barron London.
Each piece is unique, as the artifacts themselves carry distinct origins and physical characteristics.
Criticism Regarding Provenance and Ethics
The use of such relics has drawn sharp disapproval from some in the archaeological community. A content creator known as “Dr. Z,” who focuses on archaeology, publicly questioned the ethics behind the earrings. She expressed concern that the objects were likely looted from Iran, noting that their journey from their country of origin remains undocumented.
Dr. Z further argued that incorporating authentic historical artifacts into high-end fashion risks turning cultural heritage into una mercancía robada para la élite
(stolen merchandise for the elite). She suggested that the use of such items functions as a form of señalización de clase
(class signaling) and criticized the trend of fetichizar el pasado
(fetishizing the past), suggesting that replicas would be a more ethical alternative.
Method Dressing and Artistic Intent
The appearance was part of a broader trend known as “method dressing,” where actors align their red-carpet attire with the themes of their current project. In La Odisea, directed by Christopher Nolan, the actress portrays the goddess Athena. The golden discs, which evoke the aesthetic of ancient ceremonial amulets or shields, were intended to complement the film’s Hellenic atmosphere.
Dr. Z noted that the irony of wearing historical jewelry in a film she characterized as having an anacrónico
(anachronistic) language and style was a particularly notable choice.
