A 49-year-old man in Free State, South Africa, has been arrested after allegedly fatally shooting his 22-year-old nephew, mistakenly believing him to be an intruder.
Accidental Shooting in Thabong
Police responded to a home in Thabong where a 22-year-old male was found with a gunshot wound to the chest. The man later died at a local hospital, according to police spokesperson Sgt Palesa Thabana.
The uncle told authorities he believed there was an intruder in the kitchen and fired a shot, wounding his nephew. The deceased was transported to the hospital by his family.
“Upon arrival police were pointed out to the body of a 22-year-old male,” Thabana said. “He succumbed to his injury after being brought to the hospital and was declared dead in hospital.”
The firearm, its license, and seven live rounds were confiscated as evidence. The 49-year-old man is expected to appear in the Welkom magistrate’s court on Tuesday to face a murder charge.
