Firefighters rescued an unconscious woman from a burning house in Roxburgh Park, Melbourne, on Thursday morning after two other residents escaped by breaking a window. The blaze occurred on Correll Way around 7:30 a.m.

Roxburgh Park House Fire: Woman Rescued

Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) Commander David Woods said a working smoke alarm alerted a male and a female, both in their late teens and early 20s, to the fire.

The two younger residents attempted to exit the house but were unable to do so. They then called Triple Zero (000) and broke a front bedroom window to escape.

Fire crews entered the home and located a woman, believed to be around 50 years old, unconscious in a bedroom.

“Fire crew and ambulance crews then worked on the occupant for about 25 minutes and were able to get a pulse back,” Commander Woods said.

The woman was transported to Alfred Hospital in critical condition. Paramedics also treated the two younger residents for distress.

“The occupants that got out were very lucky that the smoke alarm was operating and woke them up,” Commander Woods said. “That saying — ‘smoke alarms save lives’ — here’s a classic example.”

The fire was brought under control approximately half an hour after the rescue. FRV reported extensive damage to the woman’s bedroom and the roof cavity, with the remainder of the house heavily smoke-logged.

FRV and Victoria Police are investigating the cause of the fire.
