UNIFIL statement (2 January 2026)

Peacekeepers stationed near Kafer Shouba reported being subjected to small arms and machine-gun fire on Tuesday, with assessments indicating the fire originated from an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) position. No damage or injuries were reported in either incident.

Blue Line Incident: Peacekeepers Report Fire from IDF Position

The first incident occurred earlier today when peacekeepers reported fifteen rounds of small arms fire landing approximately fifty metres away from their patrol. Less than twenty minutes later, a second patrol in the same area reported approximately 100 rounds of machine-gun fire, also striking within fifty metres of their location.

Peacekeepers assessed that both instances of fire came from an IDF position south of the Blue Line. Following standard procedure for patrols in sensitive areas, UNIFIL had informed the IDF about activities in those areas in advance.

UNIFIL issued a “stop fire” request through its liaison channels following both incidents. Officials have expressed concern over the increasing frequency of these events, stating that attacks on or near peacekeepers represent serious violations of Security Council resolution 1701.

A call has been reiterated to the IDF to cease aggressive behaviour and attacks on or near peacekeepers working to maintain peace and stability along the Blue Line.
