US Military Personnel Killed in Jordan as Conflict With Iran Escalates

The United States military has confirmed that two American service members were killed and another remains missing following a ballistic missile and drone attack on U.S. and partner forces in Jordan on July 17. On Sunday, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that military personnel recovered unidentified human remains at the site of the attack. An examination is currently underway to determine if the remains belong to the missing service member.

This loss of life occurred as part of a significant escalation in hostilities between the United States and Iran. According to CENTCOM, the conflict has effectively ended an interim ceasefire that had been negotiated last month. Both nations have resumed direct military operations, with the U.S. launching strikes against Iranian military targets and Iran conducting missile and drone attacks against U.S. and allied interests in the region.

Strikes have been reported in multiple Iranian cities, including Bandar Abbas, Greater Tunb Island, Qeshm Island, Sirik, Chabahar, Konarak, Rask, Khondab, Khorramabad, and Semnan. Additionally, Iran’s Atomic Energy Organisation reported that projectiles struck the under-construction Darkhovin nuclear power plant. Retaliatory actions by Iran have targeted various U.S. and allied facilities:

  • A separate attack hit an electricity generation and water desalination facility.

The escalation has resulted in mounting civilian casualties and damage to critical infrastructure. Reports indicate that at least 35 people have been killed and over 300 injured since the latest phase of the conflict began. In the Iranian city of Ahvaz, strikes reportedly forced the emergency evacuation of 211 patients from a hospital, drawing condemnation from Iranian officials who characterized the action as a violation of international humanitarian principles.

The U.S. maintains that its operations are a response to Iranian aggression, specifically attacks on three commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. CENTCOM confirmed it disabled a “non-compliant” oil tanker attempting to approach Kharg Island using Hellfire missiles. The U.S. stated its broader military campaign is intended to degrade Iran’s ability to threaten global shipping corridors and protect U.S. forces.
