President Donald Trump on Saturday outlined a plan for the United States to temporarily administer Venezuela, following an operation to remove Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro from power. Trump also issued a warning to neighboring Colombia and detailed plans for U.S. involvement in Venezuela’s oil industry.
Venezuela Under U.S. Administration
“We’re going to run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition,” Trump stated during a press conference. He indicated that officials present with him – including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, senior aide Stephen Miller, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, and top US General Dan Caine – would be involved in the administration of the country, aiming to “bring it back.”
Negotiations and Leadership Prospects
Trump described Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez as “essentially willing to do what we think is necessary to make Venezuela great again.” However, he expressed reservations about Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, stating, “I think it would be very tough for her to be the leader. She doesn’t have the support within or the respect within the country.”
Oil Industry and Embargoes
The President announced plans for U.S. oil companies to invest “billions of dollars” to repair Venezuela’s oil infrastructure. Despite this, he affirmed that “the embargo on all Venezuelan oil remains in full effect,” and that the U.S. military remains “poised in position,” retaining “all military options.”
Further Military Action
Trump indicated a willingness to escalate military involvement if necessary, stating, “We are ready to stage a second and much larger attack if we need to do so.” He also claimed, “We had boots on the ground last night at a very high level, actually,” and asserted the U.S. is “not afraid of boots on the ground if we have to have.”
U.S. Dominance in Latin America
Trump outlined a broader strategy for U.S. influence in the region, stating, “Under our new national security strategy, American dominance in the Western Hemisphere will never be questioned again.” He emphasized the desire for “good neighbors” and access to the region’s energy resources, stating, “We need that for ourselves.”
Warning to Colombia
Addressing Colombian President Gustavo Petro, Trump issued a direct warning, saying, “He’s making cocaine and they’re sending it into the United States, so he does have to watch his a$$.”
