Villa Vie Residences Suspends Cruise, Evicting 200 Passengers in Cambodia

Fuel costs surging up to $8,000 per cabin forced Villa Vie Residences to abruptly suspend its multi-year global cruise on October 27, 2026, evicting over 200 passengers in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, with just eight hours’ notice and leaving its future uncertain.

The Eight-Hour Eviction Notice in Sihanoukville

Passengers aboard the residential cruise ship Villa Vie Odyssey learned their round-the-world voyage was over at 6 a.m. on October 27, 2026. The Florida-based operator, Villa Vie Residences, ordered all residents to clear their cabins by 2 p.m. that same day as announced by the company.

The ship was docked in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, when the suspension took effect. Evicted residents were transported to local hotels in the port city while the ship’s crew remained on board to maintain essential systems according to executive updates. Cambodian officials, including Preah Sihanouk Province Deputy Governor Long Dimanche, stated that the vessel was carrying 203 passengers and 156 crew members at the time of the shutdown as reported by local authorities.

Passengers Lanette Canen and John Bodin stated by email that they received notice from the CEO at around 6 a.m. on October 27, 2026, instructing all residents to disembark by 2 p.m. that day. Having boarded the Odyssey at its maiden launch in September 2024, Canen and Bodin managed a YouTube channel documenting their life at sea titled Living Life on a Cruise. They noted that while they knew leaving was a possibility, the eight-hour notice still surprised them.

Wyoming retirees Paul and Lynn Montoya explained that they purchased a window-equipped cabin and anticipated years of travel after embarking 17 months prior in Panama. Paul Montoya praised the concept of residential cruising but stated that the shipowner lacked the expertise to make the business financially sustainable, remarking that hopes kept sinking further and further into the hole through mismanagement. Holly Hennessy, who has been aboard the Odyssey with her cat Captain since the ship first set sail, noted that residents were given less than one day’s notice before they had to disembark. Carol Larson, 69, and her sister, Crystal Lavering, 72, two California sisters who lived aboard the MV Odyssey in separate cabins for about 18 months, described the suspension as heartbreaking.

Surging Marine Fuel Prices and the Impact of the Iran War

Company executives blamed the shutdown on extraordinary financial pressure driven by soaring petroleum prices. Villa Vie Residences reported that monthly fuel expenses per cabin, which historically averaged about $1,800, climbed as high as $8,000 in parts of Asia following disruptions in maritime supply lines. Regional energy costs spiked after the war involving Iran began in late February, restricting tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz as detailed in company disclosures.

Before halting operations, the operator attempted to mitigate the losses. Since the conflict began in late February, we have taken significant steps to reduce fuel consumption, including slowing the itinerary and spending more time in port, the company stated in a public release. However, management concluded that passing those extreme price increases directly onto cabin owners was unfeasible and that operating losses were no longer sustainable according to financial statements. The company noted that passing the full increase on to residents was not a realistic solution.

Financial Realities for Cabin Owners and Crew Support Efforts

The Odyssey originally set sail from Belfast, Northern Ireland, in October 2024 on what was marketed as a three-and-a-half-year circumnavigation following an extensive refit of the 1993-built vessel. Permanent residences on the ship started at roughly $120,000, while multi-year suites and shorter rentals were also sold alongside mandatory monthly maintenance fees covering daily living expenses as outlined in sales documentation. A five-year contract on the Odyssey carries a starting price of $59,999, permanent cabins are priced at $119,999, and residents additionally incur monthly fees ranging between $3,299 and $9,500 based on their suite choice to cover meals, beverages, internet access, medical consultations, room upkeep, and additional expenses. Passengers can also rent cabins starting from $3,499 per month.

Cracks in the financial foundation had surfaced prior to the final shutdown. Weeks before the suspension, passengers intervened when management fell behind on payroll for shipboard workers. Cruise blogger Randy Cassingham noted that residents organized a collection at mealtimes to distribute $100 in cash to every non-officer crew member to cover missed wages.

Villa Vie Residences faced accusations of financial instability and mismanagement, with passengers claiming the firm struggled with mounting costs and a precarious business model.

They’re counting on me to make the decisions here and there’s nothing else I’m focused on. I’m the villain in the story, but I’m doing everything I can to support the residents on a solution forward.

Restructuring Plans and the Road Ahead in Sihanoukville

Villa Vie Residences announced it will enter a 60-day period focused on restructuring and recapitalization, though leadership cautioned that no outcome is guaranteed in updates provided to investors. Meanwhile, passengers are weighing their options, with some organizing efforts to rescue the venture while others prepare to fly home after disembarking in Cambodia.

Provincial officials stated that the Odyssey was scheduled to refuel before departing Sihanoukville, though the company itself has not publicly confirmed a departure date for the vessel pending ongoing corporate evaluations.
