Multiple volcanoes around the world are exhibiting eruptive activity, ranging from growing lava domes to significant ash plumes, as of March 9, 2026. Activity has been reported in Russia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Vanuatu, Guatemala, Ecuador, Peru, and other regions.
Volcanic Activity Summary – March 9, 2026
Shiveluch (Kamchatka) continues to experience an extrusive eruption, with a growing lava dome on its northwestern side. The dome has surpassed the height of Molodoy Shiveluch, reaching an altitude of approximately 2,400 meters above sea level, though no significant ash emissions have been observed.
Mayon (Luzon Island, Philippines) is currently erupting, with a Volcanic Ash Advisory issued by the Volcanic Ash Advisory Center Tokyo.
Ibu (Halmahera, Indonesia) is exhibiting explosive activity, with a volcanic ash plume reaching an estimated 7,000 feet (2,100 meters) altitude and moving east at 10 knots.
Semeru (East Java, Indonesia) also has a Volcanic Ash Advisory in effect, issued by the Volcanic Ash Advisory Center Darwin.
Marapi (Western Sumatra, Indonesia) experienced a powerful explosion today, generating a dense ash column rising approximately 1,600 meters above the summit. A 3 km exclusion zone is in place around the Verbeek Crater.
Aoba (Vanuatu) continues to show elevated eruptive activity, with ash plumes reaching about 13,000 feet (4,000 meters) and drifting west. The alert level for the volcano has been raised to Level 3.
Fuego (Guatemala) is experiencing ongoing explosive activity, with a volcanic ash plume reaching an estimated 14,000 feet (4,300 meters) altitude.
Nevado del Ruiz (Colombia) has a Volcanic Ash Advisory issued by the Volcanic Ash Advisory Center Washington.
Sangay (Ecuador) continues to exhibit explosive activity, with a volcanic ash plume rising to an estimated 20,000 feet (6,100 meters) altitude.
Reventador (Ecuador) experienced a strong explosion today, generating multiple pyroclastic flows and an ash column reaching 15,000 feet (4,600 meters).
Sabancaya (Peru) is exhibiting explosive activity, with a volcanic ash plume reaching an estimated 26,000 feet (7,900 meters) altitude and moving southwest.
