New average speed safety cameras are being installed across Auckland and northern Waikato, with further installations planned nationwide later this year.

Average Speed Cameras to Expand Nationwide

The cameras measure a vehicle’s average speed between two fixed points and automatically issue tickets to drivers exceeding the posted speed limit.

Four new sets of cameras will begin operating in the coming weeks at Kahikatea Flat Rd near Dairy Flat later this month, and Pine Valley Rd (Dairy Flat), Whitford Rd (east Auckland) and on State Highway 2 between Pōkeno and Mangatāwhiri in April. Signage will be installed at each location before the cameras become operational.

Construction is also scheduled to begin this month on additional average speed safety cameras on State Highway 2 at Upper Hutt, near Te Hauke in Hawke’s Bay, and on State Highway 8 between Tekapo and Twizel.

According to NZTA, the initial rollout of an average speed camera on Auckland’s Matakana Rd in December resulted in over 99% of drivers adhering to the speed limit, an increase from 88% prior to installation.

Chris Rodley, Head of driving regulation, stated that the cameras are functioning as intended. He added that international data demonstrates the effectiveness of average speed safety cameras in reducing deaths and serious injuries, as increased adherence to speed limits leads to fewer and less severe crashes.

Rodley emphasized that speeding drivers can cause “serious and irreparable harm” and that maintaining speed limits significantly reduces the risk of fatalities and serious injuries.
