William in Saudi Arabia: Diplomacy & Controversy

Prince William is traveling to Saudi Arabia as the country undergoes significant modernization and increased competition for international investment. The visit comes amid scrutiny regarding Saudi Arabia’s human rights record and the alleged involvement of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Saudi Arabia’s Evolving Landscape

Saudi Arabia has been “opening up massively over the past decade,” according to Dr. Neil Quilliam from the Middle East and North Africa programme at Chatham House. A new generation of Saudi policymakers is proving to be “much more transactional than their forefathers,” with greater competition for investment from nations like the UK.

Experts suggest that recognizing Saudi leadership, through a visit from Prince William, is highly valued by the kingdom. “The Saudis really like and appreciate being recognised and deploying Prince William sends a signal that says we really value you,” Quilliam explained.

Concerns Over Human Rights

However, the visit is expected to draw criticism due to Saudi Arabia’s human rights record. A 2021 U.S. intelligence report found that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, also known as MBS, approved the murder of exiled Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018. The report indicated a plan to either “capture or kill” Khashoggi.

Saudi Arabia has rejected the report, deeming it “negative, false and unacceptable,” and MBS has denied any involvement in the murder.

Despite modernization efforts, Saudi authorities continue to suppress dissent, both within the country and abroad. In January, a UK court ruled that Saudi Arabia must pay Ghanem al-Masarir damages exceeding £3 million.

Al-Masarir, a London-based YouTuber and satirist, testified that he was followed, assaulted, and had his phone bugged by agents acting on behalf of the Saudi regime, resulting in psychological damage. The court sided with al-Masarir’s claims.

Al-Masarir, despite his own experiences, does not oppose Prince William’s visit but urges the UK’s future king to openly address concerns during his time in Saudi Arabia.
