Ukraine War: Zelenskyy’s June Peace Talk Hint & US Midterms

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has indicated a potential new deadline of June from the US for peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia may be connected to the upcoming US midterm elections. The Ukrainian president stated Saturday that both sides have been invited to further talks next week, and suggested the Trump administration would likely exert pressure to end the war by summer.

Zelenskyy Suggests US Election Timing

Zelenskyy told reporters that the Trump administration is proposing to host the next round of trilateral talks in the US, likely in Miami, within the coming week. He confirmed Ukraine’s participation, adding, “The [midterm] elections are definitely more important for them [the Americans]. Let’s not be naive.” He also stated that if Russia is genuinely prepared to end the war, establishing a deadline is crucial.

Negotiators from the US and Ukraine have been discussing strategies to achieve a swift agreement, according to sources familiar with the matter. Ukraine has proposed a sequencing plan, though specific details were not disclosed by Zelenskyy.

Russian Attack and Economic Strain

Zelenskyy also criticized Russia for an overnight attack on Ukrainian energy facilities, calling for Moscow to be deprived of its ability to leverage cold weather against Kyiv. A “massive attack” on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure Saturday caused widespread power outages, according to the state grid operator.

There are growing indications that the Russian economy is faltering, facing its most precarious situation since the start of the conflict in Ukraine. Economic growth has slowed due to falling oil prices, leading to tax increases for Russians and reduced funding for essential services like welfare, education, and healthcare, as defense spending increases. Trade with key allies has diminished, corporate bankruptcies are rising, and labor shortages are becoming severe.

UK Threatens Seizure of Russian Tanker

The UK is considering seizing a Russia-linked shadow fleet tanker, potentially escalating tensions and opening a new front against Moscow as Russia’s oil revenues decline. British defense sources have identified military options for capturing a rogue ship, following the US-led seizure of a Russian tanker in the Atlantic in January. Lloyd’s List Intelligence reported spotting 23 shadow fleet ships using false flags in the Channel or Baltic Sea in January, many linked to Russian oil exports to China, India, and Turkey.

Trump Taps Military Leaders for Diplomacy

President Donald Trump has reportedly taken the unusual step of involving military leaders in high-level diplomacy, appointing Army Secretary Dan Driscoll as a key negotiator in the Russia-Ukraine war and sending Adm. Brad Cooper, the top US commander in the Middle East, to talks regarding Iran’s nuclear program.
