Severe thunderstorm watches and wind warnings are in effect for eastern Ontario and parts of southern Ontario on Monday as a cold front moves through the region.

Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Ottawa-Gatineau Area

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Ottawa-Gatineau and surrounding areas, including Brockville, Cornwall and La Pêche. The watch covers an area four days before the start of spring.

Forecasters say the storm could bring strong winds, heavy rain, hail, and lightning. Some locations within the watch area may experience daily heat records before the arrival of the cold front.

Ottawa could see temperatures rise from around 0 C at 5 a.m. Monday to 14 C by 5 p.m., before dropping back to approximately –5 C by 5 a.m. Tuesday. The colder temperatures are expected to persist Tuesday and Wednesday.

A severe thunderstorm watch means conditions are possible. A warning indicates that severe weather is happening or is imminent.

Wind Warnings and Blowing Snow

A wind warning is in place for southern Prince Edward County, with gusts up to 90 km/h expected Monday afternoon and evening. The Kingston-Belleville area could see gusts around 80 km/h starting Monday afternoon and continuing through Tuesday morning.

Communities west of Ottawa and along Highway 7 may experience five to 10 centimetres of blowing snow overnight Monday into Tuesday.

Orange-level storm warnings are also in effect for the Barrie and Sudbury areas to the west. More information on those warnings can be found here.
