A 37-year-old woman was charged Wednesday with public nuisance after a video of her spitting water at passengers on a train went viral. Sabrina Han Meizhen, a Singaporean, allegedly committed the act on January 16 at Choa Chu Kang MRT Station.

Woman Charged in Train Spitting Incident

Han is accused of spitting water at a person named Ng Siew Hiang, as well as generally spitting water while on the train. Her actions allegedly caused annoyance to the victim and other commuters.

The incident was captured in a video posted on Instagram, showing Han drinking from a bottle and repeatedly spitting water in the direction of people. Passengers were seen keeping a distance from her, and at one point, a woman attempted to take the bottle from her.

Han appeared in court via video link wearing a shirt similar to the one in the video and with a mask on her face. She asked if she could be bailed out, but the judge stated that would not be possible “for the time being.”

“After the two weeks we will review the situation,” the judge said. Han responded by saying she was remorseful and would control her anxiety attacks to prevent a recurrence.

The prosecution requested that Han be remanded at the Institute of Mental Health for psychiatric observation, and the judge ordered a two-week remand.

If convicted of public nuisance, Han could face a fine of up to S$2,000 (US$1,585). Repeat offenders, or those found to have knowingly caused annoyance, could be jailed for up to three months, fined up to S$2,000, or both.
