A Singaporean woman was fined $10,000 for obstructing the course of justice after providing gin to a man who had crashed his car while under the influence of alcohol. The incident occurred after Samuel Gomes-Lim Jia’En, 35, crashed his vehicle in the Dairy Farm area on April 14, 2024.

Details of the Incident

Claire Sng Wei Ying, 27, and Gomes-Lim had lunch at a Sentosa beach around 2 p.m. on April 14, consuming alcoholic soda among other items. Approximately three hours later, Gomes-Lim crashed his car into a pillar while entering his condominium complex.

After the crash, Gomes-Lim and Sng went to his apartment. Gomes-Lim then asked Sng to retrieve a bottle of alcohol for him. Sng returned with a gym shaker bottle containing gin, approximately two-thirds full.

Gomes-Lim consumed almost all of the gin before a Traffic Police officer arrived at the scene. As a result, the officer was unable to determine his breath alcohol concentration at the time of the accident.

Legal Proceedings

On December 15, Sng pleaded guilty to obstructing the course of justice and was fined $10,000. Her lawyers, Suang Wijaya and Ng Yuan Siang, argued for leniency, stating she did not benefit from the offense and had no prior criminal record.

Gomes-Lim initially refused to provide a breath sample and claimed to have consumed alcohol after the accident. He eventually provided a sample at around 10:15 p.m., revealing a breath alcohol concentration of 73 micrograms per 100ml of breath – more than double the legal limit of 35mcg.

Gomes-Lim’s case is still pending.
