The incident occurred at a residential property in Pallaskenry, Co Limerick. The injured woman was taken by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick for medical treatment.

XL Bully dogs were outlawed in Ireland last February. However, individuals are permitted to retain ownership of these dogs if they obtain a certificate of exemption.

These certificates are issued by local authorities to owners who can demonstrate their dog is licensed, microchipped, and neutered. XL Bully dogs without the required certificate are subject to seizure and potential euthanasia.

Owners who do not wish to keep their XL Bully dogs can surrender them to a council dog warden.

Legislation passed last October, following a series of attacks, makes it a criminal offense to import, breed, rehome, or resell an XL Bully.
