Four hundred and five cadets were commissioned as officers of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) at a parade held on Dec. 13, including two officers from the Royal Thai Army who trained alongside their Singaporean counterparts.

Second Lieutenant (2LT) Joseph Tan, 19, was among those commissioned, receiving the Sword of Honour as the best trainee in the 139th Officer Cadet Course at Safti Military Institute. Tan, a combat engineer, said he feels a duty to positively impact the lives of those he serves and ensure they have a meaningful national service experience.
Tan recalled observing the meticulousness of his instructors during live firing exercises, noting their attention to detail in planning and execution. “I saw the care they put into every single aspect of conduct to ensure it was smooth, we were able to learn effectively, and most importantly, it was safe for us,” he said.
He added, “Their professionalism made me understand the weight, the responsibility that officers have in caring for their men.”
The commissioning parade marked the completion of 38 weeks of rigorous training at the Officer Cadet School. Guests were invited to affix epaulettes on the graduating cadets, including Tan’s parents, marking him as the first officer in his family.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office and Second Minister for Finance and National Development, Ms Indranee Rajah, served as the reviewing officer. She emphasized the SAF’s stabilizing role in an increasingly uncertain global environment.
“Amid this turbulence, Singapore remains steadfast and dependable. We hold firm to our principles, our belief in international law, and our support for a rules-based order,” Ms Indranee stated. “A strong SAF gives Singapore and Singaporeans confidence and peace of mind.”
Ms. Indranee also noted that the close training experiences with the two Royal Thai Army officers strengthened partnerships with neighboring countries and enhanced learning for all cadets.
Tan shared that his father is planning to create a display case for his sword and national service badges, commemorating both their service.
