A second Malaysian pilot has been arrested by authorities investigating an international drug trafficking syndicate linked to a Malaysia Airlines co-pilot detained in Jakarta last July, bringing the total number of local arrests in the sprawling case to seven.
Bukit Aman NCID Details Arrest of Second Pilot in Klang Valley
The latest suspect, a Malaysian man in his 30s who works for a different airline, was apprehended on Monday, September 7, in the Klang Valley, according to Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan. Investigators revealed that this second pilot was allegedly responsible for handling financial flows tied to the narcotics network. As Datuk Hussein Omar Khan explained during a media conference held at an industrial area in Puncak Alam on September 9:
“So, now we have arrested seven individuals and the suspect (arrested on Monday) is a pilot from another airline,”
Authorities are examining whether this conduct constitutes money laundering as part of the broader international investigation.
Interrogation in Jakarta Unmasks Downline and Upline Operatives
The widening dragnet stems directly from a fact-finding mission to Indonesia. On Friday, September 4, Datuk Hussein Omar Khan announced that police had previously detained six local men aged between 23 and 50 across Langkawi, Penang, and Selangor. These initial six arrests occurred after an NCID investigation team traveled to Jakarta between August 11 and August 15 to question the detained 39-year-old Malaysia Airlines second officer.
The primary catalyst for these arrests was the 39-year-old co-pilot’s capture by Indonesian authorities at Terminal 3 of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in July. Indonesian National Police (POLRI) and the Indonesian Customs and Excise Office alleged that the pilot attempted to smuggle 25 kilogrammes of drugs, uncovering 15 packages containing roughly 70,114 ecstasy pills and methamphetamine with an estimated street value of RM45 million. Information extracted during the August interrogations allowed Malaysian federal investigators to track down local suppliers and transporters operating within the network.
Simultaneous Crackdown Under Op Melanoplus Yields RM10.82 Million Seizure
Datuk Hussein Omar Khan outlined the results of five raids conducted under Op Melanoplus around the Klang Valley on August 21, which netted nine additional suspects aged 19 to 33, including two women.
The August 21 raids seized a massive assortment of illicit substances weighing over 86kg in total, valued at approximately RM10.82 million. The confiscated inventory comprised:
- 61.26kg of methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) liquid
- 11.13kg of cannabis
- 6.09kg of cannabis flower
- 3.80kg of Erimin 5 pills
- 3.25kg of methamphetamine
- 870 grammes of cannabis-laced biscuits
- 490 grammes of ketamine
- 480 grammes of MDMA powder
- 0.79kg of ecstasy pills
- 959 cartridges of MDMA liquid
One individual was formally charged under Section 39A(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 on August 28, while three others faced charges under Section 39B of the same statute on September 3. Furthermore, authorities placed three suspects under preventive detention via the Dangerous Drugs (Special Preventive Measures) Act 1985, while the remaining two individuals were released on police bail.
