Five people died after a helicopter crashed on Mount Kilimanjaro in northern Tanzania on Wednesday evening. The aircraft went down during a medical evacuation mission along one of the mountain’s most popular climbing routes.
Kilimanjaro Helicopter Crash
Among the deceased were two foreign nationals who were being evacuated, a local doctor, a tour guide, and the pilot. The crash occurred between Barafu Camp and Kibo Summit at an altitude of more than 4,000 metres (13,100ft).
The helicopter was operated by Kilimanjaro Aviation, a company providing medical evacuation and other aviation services, according to Kilimanjaro regional police commander Simon Maigwa.
The company has not yet released a statement regarding the incident. Police stated that further details will be released as they become available.
The Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority launched an investigation on Thursday, adhering to international aviation safety standards, to determine the cause of the crash.
Aircraft accidents on Mount Kilimanjaro are rare. The last recorded incident occurred in November 2008, resulting in four fatalities.
