The National Freedom Party (NFP) has withdrawn from KwaZulu-Natal’s Government of Provincial Unity (GPU), instructing Mbali Shinga to resign as Social Development MEC.
NFP Withdrawal Shifts KwaZulu-Natal Political Landscape
The GPU, currently comprised of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), African National Congress (ANC), Democratic Alliance (DA), and NFP, previously held a narrow majority of 41 seats in the 80-seat KwaZulu-Natal legislature.
The MK party holds 37 seats, and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have two seats.
Thami Ntuli of the IFP was elected premier through a coalition including the IFP, ANC, DA, and NFP.
With the NFP’s departure, the governing coalition now holds 50% of the seats in the legislature.
A potential coalition between the NFP, MK party, and EFF would also result in 50% representation, leaving the provincial legislature without a clear majority.
