Industry Minister Tim Ayres criticized the opposition today for what he described as political maneuvering during the national day of mourning for the victims of the Bondi attack.

Ayres Criticizes Opposition’s Response

“I’ve never seen anything so dispiriting, so self-absorbed from a group of political parties,” Ayres told ABC Radio National this morning.

He accused the Coalition of failing to learn from the past, stating, “The Coalition hasn’t learned the lesson of the Morrison years. If you put the party interest before the national interest, you inevitably end up focused on yourselves and your own interest.”

Ayres further asserted that the opposition prioritized self-promotion over a unified national response. “They managed to make not just yesterday, but this whole week, about themselves, when it should have been about a national response to this atrocity at Bondi,” he said.

The minister highlighted Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s apology to the Jewish community at a memorial event as a demonstration of the government’s sorrow over the incident.

Ayres affirmed the government’s commitment to a thorough response, stating, “We’ve been, as a government, engaged fully, ever since the very first minutes after this event happened.” He added that the prime minister and relevant ministers are focused on ensuring a “full and effective” response and are examining any potential shortcomings without being defensive.
