A Toronto resident delivered a “Taxpayers Land Acknowledgement” at a City of Toronto budget subcommittee meeting this week, a speech that has since gone viral on social media, garnering over one million views in three days.

Taxpayers Land Acknowledgement Gains Viral Attention

Daniel Tate, executive director of IntegrityTO, an independent civic watchdog, presented the speech to the subcommittee. The acknowledgement reframes the traditional Land Acknowledgement to recognize the financial contributions of taxpayers and property owners who fund city operations.

“Let’s reflect and remember that every word spoken in this chamber, every light bulb, and every salary paid – including those of the city councillors – is funded almost entirely by the hard work and earnings of taxpayers and property owners,” Tate began, according to a transcript of the speech. He went on to cite examples of city spending he believes are wasteful or misguided, including street renaming, road paint, and harm reduction programs.

Tate told Now Toronto the speech was inspired by existing acknowledgements, such as the Land Acknowledgement for Indigenous communities and the African Ancestral Acknowledgement. He believes it highlights a hypocrisy in the city’s priorities.

“I think it exposed a bit of the hypocrisy,” Tate said. “This isn’t to take away from the fact that basically everybody needs to get a fair share in Toronto. … I think we need to create unity and cohesion as a city, just be together as one Toronto.”

IntegrityTO was founded in 2025 as a non-partisan group advocating for accountability in municipal governance. Tate said the organization was born out of frustration with the direction of the city.

“I was born here, I grew up here, I love this city. I’m a product of Toronto. But I – like so many other peoples – were becoming frustrated with what I perceived to be a [city-wide] decline,” he explained.

The video of Tate’s speech, posted on January 21, has amassed over one million views and 100,000 shares as of publication. Many Torontonians have expressed support for Tate’s message on social media, with some calling for the “Taxpayers Land Acknowledgement” to become a new norm.

Tate says the response has prompted many Torontonians to reach out in support of his cause, offering messages of thanks and appreciation. He aims to be a voice for those who are hesitant to speak out due to personal or professional circumstances.

Individuals interested in supporting IntegrityTO’s work can donate through the organization’s donation portal. Tate says funds will be used to expand the organization’s reach and increase civic engagement, particularly in advance of the upcoming October election.

“The most important thing I want IntegrityTO to build is to get more people engaged and involved in the democratic process,” Tate said. “We have a very consequential election coming up in October, and as we saw in 2022, voter turnout was terrible. It was a record low and that doesn’t bode well for a city and democracy in general. So, if we can help get more people to the ballot boxes, that would be a big, important win for us.”
