Columbia Selects University of Wisconsin Chancellor as Its President – The New York Times

Columbia University has selected Minouche Shafik, the current chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, as its next president. The appointment comes after a turbulent two years for the Ivy League school, marked by protests and controversy.

Mnookin’s Background and Appointment

Shafik, who also goes by Mnookin, has served as chancellor of UW-Madison since 2014. Her selection concludes a search that began in January 2023 following the departure of former President Gordon Gee. She will be the first woman to lead Columbia in its 269-year history.

Prior to her role at Wisconsin, Mnookin held positions at New York University and the World Bank. She earned her doctorate in political science from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Columbia University’s Recent Turmoil

Columbia has faced significant challenges in recent years, including protests related to issues of free speech and campus climate. The university’s handling of these events drew criticism from students, faculty, and alumni.

The selection of Mnookin is seen by some as a move towards stability and a fresh perspective for the institution. The Columbia University Board of Trustees formally approved her appointment.
