Pakistan is responding to alleged aggression from the Afghan Taliban with military operations along the border, while simultaneously stating there will be no dialogue with Afghanistan as attacks persist. Increased security measures are in place within Pakistan due to heightened tensions.
Operation Ghazab lil-Haq
Pakistan’s military launched “Operation Ghazab lil-Haq” (Wrath for the Right) in response to attacks originating from Afghanistan. The operation aims to target militants allegedly responsible for recent violence within Pakistan. A security alert issued by the U.S. Embassy & Consulates in Pakistan acknowledged an increased local security presence due to the escalating tensions.
Recent clashes between Pakistani and Afghan Taliban forces have intensified, occurring amidst ongoing diplomatic efforts. The BBC reports that the fighting stems from a series of cross-border attacks and disputes over the border demarcation, specifically the Durand Line, which Afghanistan does not recognize.
Pakistan has firmly stated it will not engage in dialogue with Afghanistan until cross-border attacks cease. Al Jazeera reports Pakistani officials have made it clear that continued aggression precludes any possibility of negotiations.
The current situation remains volatile, with both sides maintaining a heightened state of alert and continuing military operations. The U.S. Embassy alert advises citizens to be aware of their surroundings and exercise caution.
