President Trump stated Monday that the conflict with Iran is “very complete, pretty much,” while the Department of Defense posted on X, formerly Twitter, stating, “We have Only Just Begun to Fight.” The statements come as commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has effectively halted and seven Americans have died in combat.
Trump Claims Conflict Nearing Completion
Speaking from his golf club in Doral, Florida, the president said, “I think the war is very complete, pretty much.” He claimed Iran “has no navy, no communications, they’ve got no air force. Their missiles are down to a scatter. Their drones are being blown up all over the place, including their manufacturing of drones.”
The U.S. military reported striking more than 3,000 Iranian targets in the first week of operations. Trump asserted, “If you look, they have nothing left. There’s nothing left in a military sense.”
Iran Announces New Supreme Leader
Late Sunday, Iran announced Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei would replace his father as the country’s supreme leader. Trump stated he has “no message for him. None, whatsoever,” and indicated he has someone else in mind to lead the country.
Strait of Hormuz and Oil Prices
Commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global oil supply (approximately 20%), has largely stopped. Trump said the U.S. “could do a lot” about the strait and threatened Iran if it inhibits the waterway, warning, “They’ve shot everything they have to shoot, and they better not try anything cute or it’s going to be the end of that country.” He added, “If they do anything bad, that would be the end of Iran and you’d never hear the name again.”
The president also claimed the strait is currently open and that ships are entering, but added he is “thinking about taking it over.”
The U.S. benchmark for crude oil dropped as much as 13.7%, or around $13 per barrel, following CBS News’ interview with the president, before partially recovering. Oil prices are slightly down since Friday, though remain above pre-war levels. Major stock indices closed in positive territory Monday after spending most of the day in the red.
Trump initially estimated the conflict would conclude in about a month, stating Monday, “We’re very far ahead of schedule.”
The president added that “wrapping up is all in my mind, nobody else’s.”
A dignified transfer of the remains of U.S. Army Sgt. Benjamin Pennington, who died of injuries suffered in a March 1 attack at Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia, will be attended by Vice President JD Vance later Monday. So far, seven Americans have died in combat.
