Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will resign from the state legislative council on Monday, according to reports. The move comes days after Kumar was elected to the Rajya Sabha and following his announcement to step down from the state’s top job.
Nitish Kumar’s Resignation
JD(U) MLA Anant Kumar Singh confirmed Kumar’s resignation, stating that while many wished for him to remain as chief minister, he did not agree. Kumar announced his decision to seek a seat in the Rajya Sabha on March 5, expressing a long-held desire to be a member of both Houses of the Bihar Legislative Assembly and both Houses of Parliament.
In a social media post, Kumar stated he had consistently received trust and support from the people of Bihar for over two decades. He expressed gratitude for the progress and dignity Bihar has achieved during his tenure.
“From the very beginning of my parliamentary journey, I have harboured a desire to become a member of both Houses of the Bihar Legislative Assembly as well as both Houses of Parliament,” Kumar said in his statement. He assured his continued commitment to the development of Bihar and pledged full cooperation to the new government that will be formed.
Kumar’s decision comes less than four months after leading the National Democratic Alliance to victory in the Bihar polls. The veteran leader, who recently turned 75 and took oath for a record tenth term in November, is now set to move to the Rajya Sabha. His move to the Upper House opens the possibility for the Bharatiya Janata Party to appoint its own chief minister in Bihar for the first time.
