Deadly train crash in Bekasi injures dozens, triggers major evacuation

Several passengers were injured Monday evening following a collision between a CommuterLine train and a long-distance diesel train (KRD) at East Bekasi Station in Bekasi City, West Java.

Initial findings indicate the CommuterLine was stopped on track 1 heading eastward toward Cikarang when a long-distance train traveling from the west entered the same track and collided with it. Heri, a surviving passenger, reported that the rear of the CommuterLine was crushed before passengers were evacuated by officers.

The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) deployed elite personnel from the Basarnas Special Group (BSG) to manage the incident. The SAR team utilized specialized qualifications and equipment specifically designed for extractions in land transportation accidents.

KAI Response to East Bekasi Station Train Accident

Dozens of injured victims, some of whom were unconscious, were rushed to the nearest hospital for medical treatment. PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) is currently maximizing the evacuation process for all affected passengers.

Franoto Wibowo, Public Relations Manager for KAI Operations Area 1 Jakarta, stated that the agency is working alongside police to evacuate the trains and restore normal operations as quickly as possible.

KAI Vice President of Corporate Communications Anne Purba apologized to customers for the incident. Purba stated that the company’s current focus is ensuring that all passengers and staff receive the most effective care.
