Vijay’s Final Film ‘Jana Nayagan’ Set for July 23 Release With ‘A’ Certificate
Actor and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay’s long-delayed film, Jana Nayagan, is officially scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on July 23, 2026. The production house, KVN Productions, confirmed the date following the completion of required certification formalities, with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) awarding the film an ‘A’ certificate.
The film, directed by H. Vinoth, has a confirmed runtime of 3 hours and 3 minutes.
Censorship and Production Hurdles
The path to release for Jana Nayagan involved significant challenges. The producers subsequently engaged in a legal battle in the Madras High Court before withdrawing their petition to resubmit the film for final clearance.

Producer K Venkata Narayana confirmed that the CBFC mandated approximately 20 seconds of cuts and 10 seconds of replacement footage. Notable adjustments included the removal or muting of specific religious references, including the words “Bhagavathan,” “Ranganathar,” and “OM.” Additionally, the board requested the alteration of a book cover featuring an image of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and a dialogue that linked the Indian Constitution to the constitution of Vijay’s political party, the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK).

Narayana stated that the producers complied with the requested modifications to respect the law, noting that the political dialogue was adjusted to be more relatable in its description of consequences for failing to follow established rules.
Industry Impact and ‘Domino Effect’
The official confirmation of the July 23 release date has triggered significant shifts in the Tamil film industry’s release calendar. Industry reports indicate that the high anticipation surrounding Vijay’s final film has led other production houses to adjust their schedules to avoid a direct theatrical clash with Jana Nayagan.

Among the projects affected is Sigma, the directorial debut of Jason Sanjay, which was originally slated for a July 31 release. According to industry reports, Sigma is expected to be postponed to August to secure better screen availability. Other projects, including GV Prakash’s Immortal and Mysskin’s Sathyavan Savithiri, have also reportedly sought alternative windows to avoid the anticipated dominance of the Vijay-starrer in both domestic and overseas markets.
Context of the Final Feature
Jana Nayagan was originally slated for a January 2026 release but faced delays due to the aforementioned censorship issues and a subsequent legal process. During the delay, the film also faced a security incident involving a reported online leak of portions of the movie in April, which prompted a police investigation.
Despite these setbacks, the film has maintained high levels of public interest. Ahead of the release, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay met with actor Sivakarthikeyan, who shared photographs of the encounter on social media, describing the meeting as a meaningful moment in their professional relationship.
