Super Micro Shares Surge 20% as Gross Margin Guidance Nearly Doubles

Shares of Super Micro surged more than 20% in after-hours trading on Tuesday, after the company announced its gross margins for the quarter ending in June will be in the range of 15% to 17%. This update nearly doubles previous guidance, signaling a sharp shift in profitability for the AI server manufacturer.

The sudden rally in Super Micro’s stock—which saw shares climbing roughly 17.6% to $30 by late Tuesday—follows a volatile period for the hardware firm. While investors reacted with optimism to the margin expansion, the company’s revenue outlook remains tempered.

Margin Expansion and Operational Drivers

The primary catalyst for the stock’s upward movement is the company’s revised expectation for gross margins. Management attributed the significant improvement, which sits well above the previously forecasted 8.2% to 8.4%, to a favorable customer and product mix, as noted in the company’s latest statement. This shift marks a notable recovery in sentiment following a year of intense scrutiny and financial headwinds.

Navigating Past Scandals and Market Volatility

The company’s path to this recent surge has been marked by significant turbulence. Over the past year, the stock price has faced downward pressure, falling nearly 50% as the firm grappled with legal and regulatory challenges. In March, the Department of Justice brought charges against the company’s co-founder, Yih-Shyan “Wally” Liaw, in connection with an alleged plan to smuggle U.S.-assembled servers into China. Liaw, who had resigned from the organization in 2018, has entered a plea of not guilty.

Further complicating the narrative were events in June, when two employees were detained in Taiwan amid an investigation into the alleged smuggling of Nvidia chips. Super Micro has maintained that it is not a target of that investigation and continues to cooperate with authorities. These events followed a near-delisting from the Nasdaq in early 2025 due to delayed filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Financial Outlook and Future Filings

The market remains sensitive to the company’s capital structure. In June, the stock experienced a sharp sell-off after the firm announced plans to raise $7 billion in equity financing, which sparked investor concerns regarding share dilution. Super Micro is now positioning itself to meet revenue near the lower end of its $11 billion to $12.5 billion guidance.

Investors are now looking toward the next formal update to see if these margin improvements translate into sustained profitability. Super Micro is scheduled to report its next full earnings results on August 11, after the market closes. Until then, the focus remains on whether the company can maintain its current order volume while navigating the ongoing regulatory inquiries that have defined much of its recent fiscal year.
