Cultural Activities May Slow Biological Aging, Tokyo University of Science Study Finds

Researchers analyzed data from 1,899 adults, finding that higher cultural engagement correlates with a lower biological age, potentially offering health benefits similar to regular physical activity.

New research published in Epidemiology and Community Health has identified a potential link between cultural participation and physiological health.

Measuring Biological Aging Through Cultural Participation

The study, which utilized data collected between 2004 and 2009 from 1,899 adults aged 50 and older, focused on 10 physiological markers, including blood pressure, grip strength, walking speed, and body mass index (BMI). According to ammonnews.net, researchers found that participants with the highest levels of cultural involvement had an average biological age of 66.9 years, whereas those with minimal engagement averaged 69.9 years.

Even after adjusting for socioeconomic factors such as household income, employment status, and chronic illness, the data suggested that each one-point increase in a cultural participation index was associated with a reduction in biological age by 0.085 years—roughly 31 days. The research team noted that while wealth and health influence access to arts and culture, there are affordable ways to engage that may also incorporate physical activity.

The Cumulative Impact of Social and Cultural Connections

The findings regarding cultural engagement align with broader research into how social experiences integrate into human biology. A separate study, published in Brain, Behavior, & Immunity Health and reported by MSN, suggests that long-term social ties—ranging from childhood family support to community and religious involvement—also contribute to slowing biological aging and reducing systemic inflammation.

The study measured physiological health through epigenetic clocks, systemic inflammation markers, and neuroendocrine functions. Ong emphasized the long-term nature of these benefits, comparing social investment to a retirement account.

Limitations and Future Research Directions

While both sets of findings point to a positive correlation between engagement and health, researchers from both studies urge caution regarding causality. The data are based on longitudinal and cross-sectional snapshots, meaning it is possible that healthier individuals are simply more capable of maintaining active social and cultural lives.
