Parkway East Projected to Reopen Early Next Week Following Bridge Replacement

Interstate 376, a vital artery for Pittsburgh commuters, is trending toward an earlier-than-expected reopening. While the original schedule for the bridge replacement project—which closed the highway between the Squirrel Hill Tunnel and the Edgewood/Swissvale exit on July 10—slated the return of traffic for August 3, recent progress has shifted that timeline forward.

Progress on the Commercial Street Bridge Replacement

The core of the project’s success lies in the efficient demolition and installation of the new bridge span. According to Triblive, the 22-million-pound structure was successfully slid into place on Monday afternoon. The operation, managed by Dutch subcontractor Mammoet, took approximately eight hours—significantly faster than the 25 to 30 hours PennDOT originally anticipated.

PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll described the project as a stunning engineering achievement during a site briefing, noting that the agency is not rushing the work despite the accelerated pace. The original August 3 deadline was intentionally conservative to account for potential equipment failures or adverse weather, allowing crews to maintain a high standard of safety while pushing for an early finish.

Remaining Construction and Weather Variables

While the heavy lifting of the bridge slide is complete, the project still requires precise technical work before the highway can safely accommodate 100,000 cars a day.

PennDOT District 11 Executive Jason Zang emphasized that the timeline remains sensitive to environmental factors.

Contractor Incentives and Project Scope

The $95 million project includes a performance-based incentive structure for contractors. According to Triblive, contractors stand to earn a maximum bonus of $2 million if the bridge opens before 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday. However, this bonus decreases on an hourly basis as the deadline approaches August 3. Officials stressed that this incentive is meant to reward efficiency rather than encourage dangerous shortcuts.

While the Parkway East is expected to open mid-next week, the status of Commercial Street itself is different. As WPXI noted, the surface-level connector road is still expected to remain closed until August 3 to allow for necessary cleanup from the bridge demolition. Additionally, crews have taken advantage of the highway closure to perform maintenance on the outbound Squirrel Hill Tunnel, ensuring that the infrastructure surrounding the new bridge is also in optimal condition.
