Samsung Electronics is preparing to host its Galaxy Unpacked 2026
event in London, where it will unveil the Galaxy Z8 series. The new lineup, which includes the Galaxy Z8 Flip, Galaxy Z8 Fold, and a Fold 8 Ultra, represents a strategic shift in the company’s approach to the premium foldable market. According to finance.biggo.com, the standard Fold 8 is expected to feature a wide-type design—described as resembling a passport when folded—with a 5.5-inch cover display and a 7.6-inch inner display at a 4:3 aspect ratio.
Samsung Galaxy Z8 Series: Redefining the Foldable Form Factor
This “passport-style” design aims to address common user feedback regarding the narrow form factor of previous models. While the standard Fold 8 will prioritize this wider layout, Samsung is expected to maintain the existing long, slim form factor through the Ultra model, allowing the company to cater to different user preferences.
Technological Advancements and AI Integration
A central feature of the next-generation foldables is the introduction of “Flex Titanium” display technology. This dual-layer structure utilizes a titanium alloy film and a titanium plate to replace traditional plastic film. According to finance.biggo.com, this shift is intended to reduce screen creasing and display thickness while simultaneously improving durability and power efficiency.

These hardware changes are designed to support the expanding role of on-device AI. As AI functions move into everyday workflows—such as document summarization, content editing, and scheduling—the larger, wider screen is expected to provide a more practical canvas for multitasking and cross-app information management.
Market Dynamics and Competitive Landscape
The 2026 foldable market is projected to be defined by intensifying competition. Counterpoint Research forecasts that global foldable smartphone shipments will grow by 21% year-on-year in 2026. While Samsung is projected to maintain its leadership with a 32% market share, the entry of Apple is expected to significantly alter the landscape. Eetasia reports that Apple is projected to capture a 25% share in 2026, with Huawei holding 24%.

Despite this pressure, industry analysts emphasize Samsung’s enduring competitive advantages. Apple's entry is expected to lift overall consumer awareness and raise the benchmark for premium foldables, but Samsung still has a clear advantage in product maturity, channel reach and foldable user experience,
said Liz Lee, Associate Director at Counterpoint Research, as noted by Eetasia.
Navigating a Shifting Industry
Samsung’s latest launch comes at a time of transition for the category. Data from Smart Analytic Global indicated that global foldable phone shipments in the second quarter of the year totaled 3.4 million units, a 2% decline year-over-year. During that period, Huawei held a 48% share, while Samsung stood at 15%.
The upcoming Galaxy Z8 series is positioned as a critical response to these challenges. By bifurcating the Fold lineup and doubling down on wider, more practical designs, Samsung is attempting to defend the market it pioneered. As noted by msn.com, the company is betting that superior usability, improved durability, and AI-driven features will reignite mainstream demand for foldables as the sector prepares for the broader industry impact of Apple’s expected entry.
