The 135th edition of the Durand Cup, one of India’s most prestigious and oldest football tournaments, will feature a significant shift in matchday operations for its Kolkata-based fixtures. As the tournament prepares to kick off on July 25, 2026, officials have confirmed the introduction of a paperless ticketing system for all 16 matches held in the city.
New Ticketing Protocol for Kolkata
West Bengal Sports Minister Dr. Indranil Khan announced that supporters attending games at Kolkata’s Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (Salt Lake Stadium) and Kishore Bharati Krirangan will no longer be required to visit offline redemption outlets to stamp their online tickets. In previous seasons, fans were often required to exchange or stamp digital purchases before gaining entry to the stadium.
Under the new system, spectators can proceed directly to the stadium entry gates by displaying their valid e-tickets. According to the Durand Cup Committee and the West Bengal Department of Youth Services and Sports, this initiative aims to eliminate the need for additional verification processes, thereby reducing long wait times outside the venues.
Tournament Opener and Kolkata Derby
The 2026 Durand Cup is scheduled to begin on July 25 with a highly anticipated Kolkata Derby between Mohun Bagan Super Giant and East Bengal at the Salt Lake Stadium. The match is set to commence at 5:00 PM. Ahead of this opener, authorities have allocated 5,100 tickets each to the two competing clubs.
The tournament will run until August 23 and features 24 teams from across the country. In addition to the new ticketing rules, the 2026 edition introduces increased prize money and new awards intended to provide greater recognition to emerging local players.
Expansion to Ranchi
While Kolkata continues its tradition of hosting matches, the 2026 tournament marks the first time the Durand Cup will be held in Ranchi, Jharkhand. Matches at the Birsa Munda Football Stadium, Morabadi, are scheduled from July 26 to August 16.
Unlike the paperless system in Kolkata, ticket distribution in Ranchi involves a physical collection process. According to Sports Director Chhavi Ranjan, approximately 12,000 tickets were booked on the first day of distribution. Spectators in Ranchi are required to present a valid government-issued photo ID at dedicated counters at the stadium to collect their passes, with a limit of four tickets per person.
The Ranchi venue has a total seating capacity of 28,000, with 3,500 seats reserved for VIPs, students, and other guests. The city is slated to host six league matches and one quarter-final, featuring teams such as Jamshedpur FC, Indian Air Force FT, Defenders FC, and SC Delhi. To build public engagement, the Indian Army has organized a trophy tour in Ranchi, scheduled for July 18, to promote the event throughout the city.
Administrative Oversight
Preparations for the tournament have involved high-level coordination across multiple departments. In Ranchi, a review meeting chaired by Mukesh Kumar, Secretary of the Department of Tourism, Art, Culture, Sports and Youth Affairs, emphasized the need for high standards in event management. Key focus areas for the administration include:
