African Union Reports Africa Accounts for 95 Per Cent of Global Malaria Deaths

Africa accounts for approximately 95% of malaria-related deaths and 94% of global malaria cases, according to Ambassador Amma Twum-Amoah, the African Union (AU) Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development. Speaking at the African Union Extraordinary Health Summit in Accra on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, Twum-Amoah stated that these statistics highlight a devastating impact on the continent, particularly for national economies, vulnerable families, and children under five.

Human and Economic Impact of Malaria

Ambassador Twum-Amoah emphasized that the figures represent more than just statistics, noting that behind the data are children who never reach their fifth birthday, families pushed deeper into poverty, and economies deprived of human potential. To address these persistent health challenges, she called for increased investment, sustained commitment, and stronger collaboration between development partners and African countries.

The summit in Accra brought together stakeholders, policymakers, and health leaders to discuss strategies for improving preparedness for future and current public health threats while strengthening healthcare systems. The overarching theme of the Ministerial Session was Advancing Justice, Equity and Universal Health Coverage: Ending AIDS, TB, improving maternal health, addressing endemic non-communicable and neglected tropical diseases and conditions in Africa.

Broader Health Challenges in Africa

Beyond malaria, the AU Commissioner highlighted several other critical health burdens facing the continent:

  • Neglected Tropical Diseases: Africa carries close to 40% of the global burden of these diseases.
  • Tuberculosis: This continues to affect millions, driven by factors such as overcrowding, malnutrition, displacement, poverty, and limited access to treatment and diagnosis.
  • Non-Communicable Diseases: Conditions including mental health conditions, cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and chronic respiratory disease are rising rapidly.

Climate Change and System Fragility

Environmental factors are further complicating the fight against the disease. A study published in Nature estimates that climate change could trigger 123 million additional malaria cases across Africa by 2050, even if current climate commitments are met. The research warns that climate change could lead to more than half a million additional malaria deaths in Africa over the next 25 years.

The study found that 93% of these additional deaths and 79% of the increased transmission risk are linked to climate-driven disruptions—such as severe storms, cyclones, and floods—rather than heat alone. These extreme weather events can destroy housing and damage or cut off clinics, leading to the abandonment or delay of spraying campaigns and the use of mosquito nets. According to the models, 67% of people in Africa will face a higher risk of malaria by mid-century due to climate change, though transmission may decline in some areas of the Sahel as temperatures exceed the optimal range for mosquito survival.

Medical Research and Prevention Efforts

While the burden remains high, research continues into both prevention and treatment. A review of 25 randomized clinical trials published in Infectious Diseases on June 14 found that insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) remain highly effective in reducing transmission and saving lives across Asia and Africa, despite the spread of resistant mosquito populations. This is critical as global figures cited in the study reported nearly 597,000 malaria-related deaths and an estimated 263 million cases worldwide in 2023.

Additionally, an international research team published a study in BMC Medicine (2024) regarding cerebral malaria, a life-threatening condition often resulting in death within 24 hours if untreated. Led by Dr. Isobel Walker of the Doherty Institute, the team discovered that seven antibody responses to PfEMP1 proteins could distinguish cerebral malaria from uncomplicated malaria 87% of the time. This discovery regarding how antibodies protect young children may lead to new treatments or vaccine candidates to prevent this leading cause of death in children under five.
