McGill University Health Centre Study Finds Lasting Lung Damage in Former Smokers

Researchers at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre have identified a molecular signature of lung damage that persists in former smokers long after they quit. While some cellular recovery occurs, others show permanent changes, explaining why ex-smokers remain at elevated risk for lung diseases compared to those who never smoked.

Cellular Evidence of Lasting Damage

A study published in Translational Research provides new insight into why the lungs of former smokers do not fully return to the state of a never-smoker. By analyzing more than 100,000 lung cells from 21 individuals—including never-smokers, current smokers, and former smokers—researchers mapped molecular activity across 40 different lung cell types. The results indicate that while some lung tissue exhibits signs of recovery, other areas maintain lasting alterations in genes associated with immune function, tissue structure, and blood vessel health.

Consequently, clinicians are increasingly focused on the need for long-term monitoring rather than assuming that quitting eliminates all health threats.

Patients with a significant smoking history are often recommended to undergo regular screenings, such as low-dose CT scans, to detect potential issues like lung cancer at early, treatable stages.
