On June 24, U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper issued a directive requiring the Trump administration to provide a formal report by July 31 detailing the purpose and status of the tarp and scaffolding currently covering the building’s facade, as reported by Reuters.

The installation of the covering followed a predawn operation to strip Donald Trump’s name from the center’s signage—an action necessitated by a previous ruling from Judge Cooper, who determined the administration had unlawfully added the name to the structure in December. Democratic Representative Joyce Beatty, a member of the Kennedy Center board, initiated the lawsuit that led to the removal order and a temporary block on administration plans to close the venue for two years of renovations.

Lawyers for Representative Joyce Beatty stated via Reuters that the semi-permanent tarp obscuring the late President John F. Kennedy’s name from public view at the center appears to be an effort by the Trump administration to frustrate the restoration of the status quo as it existed prior to the renaming, and Beatty further described the obstruction of the facade as an act of petty defiance.

While the administration has petitioned a federal appeals court to stay the initial order regarding the renovations and signage, the physical state of the building remains a point of contention. Neither the White House nor the Kennedy Center provided immediate responses to requests for comment regarding the judge’s latest order.
