Jayden Adams, a 25-year-old midfielder for Mamelodi Sundowns and the South African national team, Bafana Bafana, has died. His passing was confirmed by Gayton McKenzie, South Africa’s minister of sport, arts and culture, in a statement posted on X. The news comes only weeks after Adams represented his country on the world stage during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
World Cup History and Performance
Adams was a key contributor to South Africa’s historic 2026 World Cup campaign, helping the team reach the knockout stage for the first time in its history. The team had never previously advanced to the knockout phase, even when serving as the host nation in 2010. Adams featured in all three of South Africa’s group stage matches during the tournament.
The team’s path to the knockout rounds was difficult, beginning with a 2-0 loss to Mexico that left fans with little hope. However, a subsequent draw against the Czech Republic kept the team in contention. Adams started that match against the Czech Republic on June 18, 2026, at Atlanta Stadium in Atlanta, GA, though he was substituted at halftime. Minister McKenzie noted that Adams played that specific match only hours after learning of his grandmother’s death. Adams also participated in the match against South Korea, where South Africa scored a goal to secure their advancement before ultimately losing to Canada in the knockout round.
Professional Career and Institutional Tributes
Before his transition to Mamelodi Sundowns last year, Adams played several seasons for Stellenbosch. During his time with Mamelodi Sundowns, he helped the club win the CAF Champions League this year. Following the news of his death, FIFA President Gianni Infantino released a statement saying, It’s so incredibly sad to hear that South Africa midfielder Jayden Adams has passed away just weeks after featuring in his nation’s historic FIFA World Cup campaign.

Minister Gayton McKenzie’s statement on X reflected the national sentiment: It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams, midfielder for Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana, at the age of 25.
He added, South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents, and our nation mourns alongside his family, his team-mates and the millions of supporters.
McKenzie requested that the public and media exercise restraint and compassion, and to refrain from speculation.
Family and Personal Reflection
Last month, Adendorf showed her support for Adams prior to his appearance at the World Cup in a lengthy tribute on social media. In a May 27 Instagram post, she wrote, Watching you achieve something this big has filled my heart with so much pride.
From the hard work, sacrifices, early mornings, disappointments, and moments nobody saw—you kept going, stayed disciplined, and trusted God through it all. And now look at you… representing your country on the national team.
Adendorf praised Adams for his persistence and for not giving up on his dream while facing challenges. She concluded her message by writing, No matter how far this journey takes you, just know I’ll always be your biggest supporter, loudest cheerleader, and safest place. This is only the beginning for you, my love. May God continue to guide your steps, protect you, and open even bigger doors for your future. Keep shining, keep believing, and keep making us proud.
