Bandai Namco Filmworks Announces Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO for 2027

Bandai Namco Filmworks has officially announced the production of a new series, Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO, slated for release in 2027. The project was unveiled on July 23, 2026, during an event at San Diego Comic-Con, where the company introduced the “RG Project,” a multimedia initiative that will span both television animation and video games.

The RG Project: A New Narrative Horizon

According to TMCnet, the RG Project is designed to establish a new, continuous world that exists outside of established timelines such as the Universal Century. The project aims to explore the fundamental necessity of Gundam through a new creative approach developed by director and series composer Kenji Kamiyama and SF setting supervisor Toh Enjoe.

The project utilizes a two-pronged narrative structure: * The Anime: Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO serves as the origin point of this new universe, set approximately 100 years prior to the events of the associated game. * The Game: GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT takes place in the era following the events depicted in the anime, allowing players to experience and participate in the history shaped by the anime’s narrative.

Setting and Story Premise

The story of Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO is set in a future where humanity achieved unprecedented expansion across the solar system following the arrival of three “gospels”: gravity control, faster-than-light communication, and a materialization technology. However, the interstellar vessel that brought these technologies began to malfunction within a decade of its discovery, spawning an aggressive, self-replicating ecosystem that humanity identified as the “Apocalypse.”

Following three months of combat, the front line reached a stalemate in Earth’s orbit. Humanity was forced to abandon Earth, marking the year of the retreat as A.A. (After Apocalypse) 1. By A.A. 45, the story focuses on Ray Azumi, a boy living on the lunar surface who awakens to his role in the conflict. Ray is a war orphan who lost his parents to the Apocalypse and serves as the pilot for the experimental, anti-Apocalypse mobile suit known as “Gundam Zero.”

Production and Staff

The series is being produced by Bandai Namco Filmworks with animation handled by Sola Animation. Key staff members include: * Director and Series Composition: Kenji Kamiyama * SF Setting Supervisor: Toh Enjoe * Gundam Designer: Eiichi Shimizu * Original Concept: Yoshiyuki Tomino and Hajime Yatate

Kenji Kamiyama, known for his work on the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex series, shared in a statement reported by cinematoday.jp that he initially struggled with the challenge of defining what makes a Gundam series without relying on traditional elements like the Universal Century, Minovsky particles, or the Newtype concept. He ultimately refocused on the opportunity to create a new Gundam story from the ground up.

Voice Talent and Platform Availability

Voice actor Takeo Otsuka has been cast as the protagonist, Ray Azumi. In comments provided by oricon.co.jp, Otsuka expressed his enthusiasm for the project’s multimedia scope, noting the challenge of recording for a story that spans both animation and gaming formats.
