A coalition of over 60 organizations and individuals has formally requested that Mayor Schouten abstain from participating in the ceremony if the ambassador remains on the program. The critics, including the Rotterdam Palestine Coalition and the group Een Ander Joods Geluid, argue that the ambassador’s presence is morally reprehensible given the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

In their correspondence to the mayor, these groups contend that the event, which is dedicated to victims of genocide and warnings against dehumanization, should not provide a platform for an official representative of the current Israeli regime. Political parties, including DENK, the Party for the Animals (Partij voor de Dieren), and PRO, have raised formal questions regarding the invitation. Additionally, several neighborhood councils have indicated they will not participate if the ambassador is present.

Defense of the Ambassador’s Attendance

The Joodse Gemeenschap Rotterdam (Jewish Community of Rotterdam) has strongly opposed these calls for exclusion, urging parties to abandon what they describe as a polarizing line. In a letter signed by the Nederlands Israëlitisch Kerkgenootschap (NIG), the Liberaal Joodse Gemeente (LJG), and the Jewish Student Association Rotterdam (JSAR), the community emphasized that the ceremony should not be treated as a political arena or a referendum on current politics.

According to the Jewish community, the invitation is not a political statement but an acknowledgment of the historical connection between the Holocaust and the founding of the State of Israel. They argue that excluding an Israeli representative sets a dangerous precedent that could lead to the future marginalization of Jewish organizations or speakers with ties to Israel at public memorial events. They maintain that welcoming the ambassador, as has been done in previous years, is a moral choice centered on respect for the victims of the Holocaust.

Mayor Schouten’s Response
