Kalniņš told Latvijas Avīze that their plan had been to reach the U-21 World Championship, but they had failed to do so, acknowledging that the team lacked experience against top-tier opponents.

Regarding the label of being the next Latvian handball star, Kalniņš remains grounded. He recognizes the expectations placed upon him by both fans and his new club, viewing the pressure as a constructive force. He stated that he feels the pressure, but at the same time, it motivates him greatly and compels him to work and fight so that he might one day truly become such a player.

The U20 tournament concluded with Hungary taking the gold medal after defeating Sweden in the final, while Slovenia secured bronze. Despite Latvia’s mid-table finish, Kalniņš was the only Latvian player named to the tournament’s symbolic all-star team.
