Google has introduced an upgraded data transfer tool within Android 17, enabling iPhone users to migrate photos, videos, contacts, messages, and—for the first time—passwords, Wi-Fi credentials, and eSIM profiles wirelessly during the initial setup process, bypassing the need for third-party applications or physical cables. Furthermore, the company has begun deploying the update to Pixel 8, Pixel 9, and Pixel 10 devices that operate on Android 17. Despite these efforts to lower barriers to entry, data suggests that the majority of smartphone users remain within their established ecosystems. Consumer Intelligence Research Partners estimates that 87% of U.S. iPhone buyers in the March 2026 quarter were existing iPhone users upgrading to newer models. This reflects an increase from 84% in 2025 and 85% in 2024. Conversely, only 12% of buyers in the March 2026 quarter switched from an Android smartphone, a decline from 14% in 2025. The remaining 1% consisted of users moving from basic phones or first-time smartphone buyers.

While Google’s strategy focuses on technical ease, early adopters of the Android 17 update have reported technical issues, including touchscreen input errors. Users have noted bugs regarding the device’s ability to recognize swipe actions and issues with touchscreen functionality in landscape orientation.
